Ran dry: what happened
In late May 2020 the roughly 50-year-old Mary Ann Avenue well of the Earlimart Public Utility District, one of the town's five, stopped pumping after its casing failed, and homes and businesses lost water intermittently. The district restored flow by switching on a standby well the state had ordered off in 2018 for 1,2,3-TCP contamination, and a sample showed the chemical at about twice the legal limit. Regulators issued a boil-water notice for eleven days because bacteria could have entered the depressurised system; most residents were not told the replacement source was contaminated. Another aging well failed in July 2026, leaving residents with little or no water for days.
