Ran dry: what happened
Estancia's municipal wells in the over-pumped Estancia Basin fell far short of demand after years of drought: one well had been failing since 2024, another produced about 80 gallons a minute against a 245 rating, and combined output dropped below 40 percent of consumption. On June 25, 2026, with the two storage tanks holding roughly 9 percent of capacity, the Board of Trustees declared a local water emergency with mandatory conservation restrictions and cut the CoreCivic detention centre's draw. The town has kept taps running on trucked-in water while a state-funded replacement well goes out to bid.
