Restricted: what happened
On July 11, 2024 the Academy Well, which produces nearly a third of the drinking water for the joint Hildale and Colorado City system, failed when its pump and motor burned out during a record heat wave. The two cities declared a water emergency and ordered a mandatory halt to all outdoor watering to protect drinking water and firefighting capacity; indoor use was not restricted. A replacement pump was installed within days and the ban lifted once capacity returned. The system had gone to mandatory stages before, after a well cave-in in July 2023, and again when two wells failed in May 2025.
