Ran dry: what happened
Lake of the Woods, a mountain community above Tejon Pass served by a mutual water company's wells since 1925, lost its main well in summer 2013: production fell from about 300 to 70 gallons a minute, four test wells came up dry, and the company began trucking water bought from the Lebec district into customers' tanks. The state made the first of three emergency hauled-water grants on October 23, 2013, and in February 2014 officials estimated the remaining wells could run dry by May. A state-funded replacement well exceeded the nitrate limit, so in February 2017 the State Water Board funded roughly eleven more months of hauled water, finding the system still short of supply.
