Ran dry: what happened
Monson's roughly 35 homes relied on shallow private wells, which failed one by one from June 2014 as drought pumping lowered the water table; more than a dozen had gone dry by August 2015. Families hauled water in drums from Orosi, Cutler and Dinuba, ran hoses from neighbours' wells, and relied on county bottled-water deliveries and nonprofit-installed tanks refilled by truck. The wells that still produced carried the county's highest nitrate levels.
