Ran dry: what happened
In February 2019 two undetected underground leaks drained Paonia's 2-million-gallon storage tank while the town's spring-fed raw supply, depleted by the 2018 drought, was running at roughly a quarter to a half of normal. The state imposed a boil order on February 18; on February 26 the town cut off water to 27 rural water companies it wholesales to and to about a third of in-town users to keep the schools, downtown and care facilities supplied. The town and Delta County declared emergencies and a state incident team arrived; customers were without water for a combined 13 days before service returned on March 6.
