Ran dry: what happened
Stratford Public Utility District's main well failed on August 10, 2018 when it began producing sand and its seal broke, and the backup well failed on August 12, leaving the district's roughly 330 customers without water; the district declared a water supply emergency that day. Non-potable water was trucked in by a dairy and a fire truck for bathing and flushing while residents lived on donated bottled water; an idle older well was restored on August 14 and the do-not-drink order lifted on August 22. The district later blamed casing damage from land subsidence, and said in 2022 that it remained under the 2018 emergency with the new well built in 2021 as its only reliable source.
